On Wednesday April 4, 2012, the Sacred Heart  baseball team led by Coach Mark Saukas kicked off the 2012 season with a 17-4 victory over Crosby High School!  According to the Waterbury Republican-American newspaper, “the Hearts hammered out 14 hits, led by Mike Rosa with four singles and two RBI, and D.J. Ellis, who singled three times and also drove in two. Zack Goldberg added two singles and winning pitcher Evan DeVico had a single, double and two RBI as the Hearts (1-0) batted around in the first and second innings and scored 16 times in their first three at bats.”

The Republican-American goes on to report that “yes, the Hearts whacked around Crosby pitching Wednesday and announced that the final run of the old stadium won’t be a quiet one.  ”For all of us, especially for the high school kids playing a game here, it is special,” said Hearts coach Mark Saukas. “And no matter what some people say about it, the stadium has always been special.”

The Hearts play all but one of their home games this season at the stadium. Along with Post, they’ll also share stadium home games with Kennedy High.  Saukas said he and his wife were among the many who toured the facility with Waterbury’s aldermen as renovation plans were debated.

“I’m glad it will go under renovation,” added Saukas. “Then there won’t be so many holes in the dugout, so if it rains, we’ll be OK.”

There isn’t a dry spot at the stadium when the rains come. Even so, “Municipal Stadium is a special place for all of us,” Saukas said. “We love playing here. We are fortunate to play our home games here.”

The stadium sure was home, sweet home Wednesday. The Hearts lashed out six hits in the first inning off Crosby starter Sebastian Olavarria, the big hit being a two-run single from DeVico. The Hearts then sent 13 batters to the plate in the second, smacked six more hits, scored eight runs and put the game far, far away.

“We have a pretty good team,” DeVico noted. “We made plays, hit the ball and got the win.”

Of the team’s 14 hits, 12 came in those first two innings.

“We weren’t hitting much in the scrimmages,” Ellis said, “but we’ve been taking some extra (batting practice), and it all came together today.”

The game got away from Crosby fast; it appears the Hearts have the talent to do that to many teams. There are a lot of arms in DeVico, Goldberg, Ellis and Brian Hamel, and if Wednesday is any indication, a lot of bats, too.
“We have strong arms,” noted Rosa. “Goldberg (from Wolcott) is a new addition, and he throws real good. We have a lot of arms. If we keep hitting, we’ll keep winning.”

The final season of the crumbling stadium has begun. The Hearts think they can make it an exciting one.”
