History of the Heart
Sacred Heart serves students of diverse backgrounds from more than twenty communities in the Greater Waterbury area. Sacred Heart High School is a Catholic, co-educational high school under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Hartford. Sacred Heart has a total enrollment of approximately 520 students and is located on South Elm Street in the “Heart” of Waterbury, across from St Mary’s Hospital. The school is within walking distance of the downtown business district and of the Brass Mill Commons Shopping Mall.
Sacred Heart High School was established in 1922 by Sacred Heart Parish in Waterbury as a continuation of the parish elementary school. During the early years, Sacred Heart was an all-girls school; however, in 1938 boys were admitted, and the school remains co-educational today.
To meet the expanding needs of the school, in 1975 Sacred Heart moved to its present facility on South Elm Street from its original home in the parish complex on Wolcott Street. At that time, Sacred Heart became a member of the Archdiocesan High School system under the direct control of the Archbishop of Hartford. Sacred Heart is accredited by the New England Associations of Schools and Colleges as well as by the State of Connecticut. Extensive renovation programs have been completed and further changes are being planned to ensure Sacred Heart continues to meet the challenges of the future.
