The Grace Baptist Church Memorial Scholarship Committee presented $13,500 to six college students who are active members of the congregation. The annual awards are given to the congregation’s students who are striving for academic excellence as they matriculate towards their degrees. Among the recipients were two SHHS alums - Henry Sahn '09 and Karla White '10. Henry Sahn is a junior at Quinnipiac University in Hamden majoring in biology. His occupational goal is to be a trauma surgeon and pediatrician. He is the son of Gbedeh and Annie Saye-Sahn of Waterbury. Karla White is a sophomore at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, majoring in nursing and public health. Her occupational goal is to be a pediatrician. Sacred Heart High School continued its annual tradition and kicked off a year-long 90th anniversary celebration by saluting the dedication and commitment of nine very special friends of the Heart on Monday, November 5, 2012 at the 18th Annual Awards Dinner and Silent Auction held at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington, CT. Over 700 members of the Sacred Heart family attended showcasing the true spirit of the Heart! A thundering running back with the Hearts in the 1993-94-95 seasons, Mordowanec died in July in a jet ski accident. He was 34. The loss was deeply felt in the Sacred Heart class that numbered less than 90. On Wednesday, September 5, 2012, the Sacred Heart High School Community celebrated a Welcome Back to School liturgy at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. This mass also kicked off our 90th anniversary year long celebration. Reverend James Gregory officiated, assisted by Deacon George Pettinico. Dr. Dale R. Hoyt, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, gave the opening remarks. Many faculty, staff and students were represented as Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers. Mr. James O’Connell narrated the presentation of the gifts which reflected the 90th Anniversary. The Sacred Heart High School family gathered recently at the school for the annual “Back to School Picnic” for all incoming freshman, transfer students and their families. Mrs. Erin Laferriere, director of Admissions, in conjunction with Ms. Molly Blake, Student Council Moderator and the Student Council ambassadors, organized this annual event with close to 200 students, their parents and families attending. Opening remarks included Mrs. Eileen Regan, President, Mr. Anthony Azzara, Principal, Mrs. Karen Ciarleglio, Advancement Director, and Mrs. Erin Laferriere, Admissions Director. Reverend James Gregory, chaplain and the Sacred Heart cheerleaders participated in a prayer service and welcome prayer-cheer.
