Sacred Heart Names Top Students 2012

Seunghui Ashley Han has been named Valedictorian and Kimberly Grendzinski Salutatorian of the Class of 2012 at Sacred Heart High School, according to Mrs. Eileen Regan, President. Since arriving at Sacred Heart High School from South Korea four years ago, Seunghui has certainly left her mark on the Heart’s school community and the Greater Waterbury community. During Ashley’s four years, she has served as the Layout Editor and reporter for the Forum, a member of the National Honor Society, and member of the International Club.  She also served as Social Chair of her class during her Junior and Senior year and as captain of the JETS TEAM.  She was also a member of the varsity swim, track and soccer teams. Archdiocesan Scholarship Announcement

On June 20, 2011, the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the Advancement of Catholic Schools announced scholarship recipients for the Maximilian E. and Marion O. Hoffman Foundation, Inc. Scholarship and the Archbishop's Scholarship.  The Hoffman Foundation awarded a scholarship in the amount of $2,000 to Nicholas Yarosis, member of the Class of 2015.  Nicholas recently graduated from St. Francis of Assisi School in Naugatuck.  The Archbishop's Scholarship Fund awarded Andrea Costa, member of the Class of 2015, with a scholarship in the amount of $5,000.  Andrea recently graduated from St. Mary Grammar School. Sacred Heart High School would like to congratulate Andrea and Nicholas on receiving these two prestigious awards!

Easter Traditions

In preparation for Easter this year, Miss Pasternak will be demonstrating to her students the art of Psyanka making.  Psyanky are Easter eggs decorated with a wax-resist method where wax is drawn on the egg in specific, Ukranian folk designs and then the egg is dipped in vegetable dyes.  The first layer is wax written directly on the egg; when dipped the first time those areas would remain white.  The eggs are decorated in many layers of wax and color to create beautiful Easter Eggs.  This tradition has been passed down from Mother to Daughter in Ukranian families since ancient times and is typically done during Holy Week, the last week of Lent just before Easter. The Rev. John Blanchfield Reading Room

Sacred Heart has seen many physical changes over the years, from a move in location to the addition of our beloved gym, Alumni Hall. The Heart has welcomed another addition this year, the Reverend John Blanchfield Reading Room. The Reading Room, which is a lofted addition to Sacred Heart's library, offers students a new place to study, to read, to do research, and to work on group projects. The new space, which has already been utilized by many Sacred Heart students, is dedicated to the Reverend John Blanchfield, who served as principal of Sacred Heart from 1959 to 1978. Father Blanchfield, who passed away in 2006, left not only a great legacy, but also a generous gift that allowed us to build this new room for students to enjoy.  Special…
