On Saturday, November 9th, Sacred Heart High School held its inaugural Veterans Day 5K road race.  This chip-timed event was held in partnership with the Greater Waterbury YMCA and proved to be competitive for serious runners, welcoming for casual runners and walkers, and a fun family event for the entire greater Waterbury and Sacred Heart High School community.  We wish to extend heartfelt thanks to the following friends of the Heart whose generosity as race sponsors was greatly appreciated:  Lead Sponsors – Franklin Products Incorporated and Riscassi & Davis, P.C., Gold Sponsor – Law Offices of James A. Mulhall, Jr., Maroon Sponsors – Campion Ambulance, M. J. Fahy & Sons, Incorporated, Road I.D., and Maroon & Gold Sponsors – Prestige Hospitality Group, Secor, Cassidy & McPartland, P. C., Stoll’s Pharmacy, and TORRCO.

In true SHHS spirit, the starting line began and ended at Alumni Hall on the Sacred Heart High School campus. Road race MC’s were faculty members: Michael Madden, Debora Taylor and Mark Saukus. The Star Spangled Banner was sung by eighth grader, Christina Finkenzeller of St. Mary’s School, and sophomore, Mary Gryniuk of Sacred Heart High School; an honor guard was provided by V. F. W. Post 201, along with the Brass City Young Marines. A special Veteran’s Day race prayer was given by Deacon Michael Szumigala and a donation of the entry proceeds was sent to the Wounded Warriors Fund in support of our Veterans.

The race saw three hundred twelve runners and walkers participate exceeding all expectations of a first year road race.  All who attended welcomed the wonderful sunny weather and enjoyed the well-organized route. Some forty plus spirited student, faculty, committee and parent race volunteers lined the route, along with support from the Waterbury Police and the Waterbury Street Departments. The Little Hearts Dash/Kids Fun Run kicked off the event at 9:30 a.m. followed by the 5K race at 10:00 a.m.  Refreshments were graciously donated and we wish to thank the following local businesses for their generous support: B. J. Wholesale Club, Calli Brothers, Costco Wholesale Club, Crystal Rock, Dunkin Donuts-Batista family, Meadow Farms, the YoCrunch Company, Veneziano Catering, and Wade’s Dairy.  Medals and trophies were awarded to the following participants:

What a wonderful, spirited, community, event that will surely become an annual for Sacred Heart High School! Special thanks go out to Mrs. Eileen M. Regan, President, to Mr. Anthony R. Azzara, Principal, the 5K Road Race committee members, to co-chairs, Advancement Director, Mrs. Karen Ciarleglio and Assistant Athletic Director, Mr. Michael Madden, to Sacred Heart High School students, faculty and staff, to Mrs. Kristen Mabrouk and Mr. Jim O’Rourke of the Greater Waterbury YMCA for their exceptional support, to our Sponsors and Donors, to the walkers and runners who came out and participated, and to all those whose presence in so many ways helped make this event a huge success. Proceeds from the 5K Dash will support Scholarship Assistance, both merit and financial need-based, to help afford deserving students the benefit of a Sacred Heart High School Catholic education.
