This year, the Thomas and Elsie Deeley Foundation (Ted Deeley ’62) awarded full four-year scholarships and financial aid in excess of $322,000 to three Sacred Heart High School students according to Mrs. Eileen M. Regan, President.
Deeley recipients: Elizabeth DeCrisanti, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David DeCrisanti of Waterbury will attend Fairfield University, Jeferson Garcia, son of Mr. Raul Garcia and Ms. Ana Chinchilla of Waterbury who will attend Central Connecticut State University, and Tommy Romero son of Ms. Ebelin Reyes of Waterbury who will attend Western Connecticut State University. The significant increase in the size of these scholarship awards by the Deeley Foundation was made possible by utilizing partnership agreements with colleges and universities.
The foundation was established by their two children, Ted and Donna, in 1996 to memorialize the “helping hand” approach engendered by their parents. The Deeley Foundation offers assistance to eligible Sacred Heart High School seniors who qualify for admission to a college or university but lack the financial resources to attend. These scholarships are based on the belief that personal involvement with recipients creates a tangible bond between the student and the donor. Hopefully, this bond will encourage scholarship recipients to offer personal support to someone else after they graduate by “passing it along” – in the form of mentoring and/or financial assistance.
The number of scholarships awarded each year varies from one to four students. The average number of awards is slightly over two each year, but with the recently expanded partnership agreements with colleges and universities, the foundation has been increasing the number of students receiving scholarships.
With these three awards, the total number of scholarship recipients for the fall semester of 2020 will increase to fifteen former Sacred Heart High School students on full scholarships with over $2,000,000.00 having been awarded to fifty-eight students since the inception of the Deeley Foundation in 1996.
The Sacred Heart family wishes to congratulate these fine students who make us proud every day. Special thanks to Mr. Ted Deeley, class of ’62 and the members of the Deeley family for their ongoing generosity!
